School Supplies Project for Latino Children - The goal for this project is to fill the school supply lists for children from Spanish-speaking immigrant families.  We've found that these parents don't always know of other school supply distribution programs in the community, they don't always get the lists from the schools in a timely manner , and they have trouble knowing what the items on the list are.  We ask key persons (immigrants themselves) to help identify friends and neighbors in the community who may need help, and thus involve them in the project as well.  We usually try to take the supplies to the home, which gives us the opportunity to visit with the family and offer follow up during the school year if they need help interacting with the school system (i.e. parent-teacher conferences or open house, filling out paperwork) or other types of assistance.

The number of children we are able to help depends directly on the donations we receive from churches, groups, and individuals.  We've estimated that the average cost of filling a child's school supply list is around $35 (and this doesn't include a good quality backpack).  For families with several children or limited income, this can be a lot of money.

If your church or a particular group within your church would like to help with this project, it would be greatly appreciated.  Please let me know if you are interested, and I will send you a list of the supplies we need.  Feel free to share this need with others who may be interested, contact Sue Smith, Executive Director ( LUCHA Ministries, Inc. (Fredericksburg), Latino Ministries -- CBF and VBMB  at nuttsmith@verizon.net
