Woman's Missionary Union of Virginia Organized to serve...Ready to respond

Motivating and Equipping Congregations to Help the Poor

Helping believers translate compassion into action by responding to the physical and spiritual needs of the poor.

WHY FOCUS ON HOMELESSNESS AND POVERTY?

  • Over 12 million children in America live in poverty
  • Of these children, 4.2 million are under the age of six
  • According to the USDA, 36 million Americans live in households categorized as moderately or severly hungry
  • Nearly one-half of all Americans will spend at least some portion of their "so-called" golden years living in poverty.

WHY SHOULD I BE INVOLVED?

Dorcas serves as a biblical model in addressing the problems of the poor. Dorcas the believer was also Dorcas the benefactress. Dorcas not only thought of ways to relieve the needy, but she put those thoughts into action. Among her good works was that of fashioning clothing for widows and orphans. However, her ultimate goal was to be a Christ follower as she shared Christ's love and ministered to ghose around her. Is God calling you to be a Dorcas in your community?

TELL ME ABOUT THE DORCAS PROJECT.

Through the Dorcas Ministry Project, Woman's Missionary Union of Virginia supports individuals and churches in addressing homelessness and poverty across the Commonwealth. As Christians, we believe it is our responsibility to become actively involved in bringing hope to their seemingly hopeless situation. Through intervention in the lives of those who are suffering, the cycle of poverty can be broken.

Contact the state office (800-255-2428 or 804-915-5000, ext. 267) for more information about this and other ministry projects. For a printable brochure on this project, click on link at the top left side of this page.
